Figuring out how to create this design nearly broke my brain — but in the end, I achieved exactly what I set out to.
At a glance, it looks like a well-balanced, offset, artistic take on an oval link chain. But on a deeper level, it follows a generative order that never repeats — an aperiodic sequence.
This chain was a study in puzzle-solving: creating balance without repetition and designing with intent under the strict constraints of the number 11. It's a magic number after all.
Handmade in 14-gauge sterling silver, it's designed with 11 pieces of three different sizes of oval links, along with 33 rings — all multiples of 11, with complete pattern avoidance.
The real challenge was not only eliminating predictability, but also aligning the exact center of the chain into a perfectly balanced, symmetrical strand of rings that form an ideal space for a pendant. And pendant or not, this chain stands on its own as a wearable work of art.
